Welcome to my e-shrine about Neopets! Here I will cover my personal connection to the website, my favorite neopets, and nostalgic links.

What Is Neopets?

original Bruce neopet design, based on TV broadcaster Bruce Forsyth.

Neopets is a virtual pet website! Launched in 1999 by Adam Powell and Donna Williams, the website was initially intended for university students, and had a suitably ironic sense of humor which it never truly abandoned. The site has gone through a fascinating series of player population changes since then: in the early 2000s, the site became popular with kids, which led to it being revamped into a children's entertainment website. Now, Neopets is most popular with young adults seeking out a hit of childhood nostalgia (including me). I think it's funny how the site found its originally intended audience of college-age players in the end.

The main gameplay loop involves players creating and caring for Neopets, and earning neopoints through games and random chance events. Neopia has a surprisingly complex economy, and farming neopoints as well as collecting rare and expensive items is a major draw for many players.

Over the decades, Neopets has played host to many bizarre and embarrassing scandals, from rumored Scientology connections to major security breaches to black market pet trading.
